Baltimore is rapidly emerging as a leader in life sciences and MedTech, with local founders at the forefront of these industries developing groundbreaking medical devices, AI-powered diagnostics, and life-saving healthcare solutions. However, many entrepreneurs face significant challenges in securing funding and scaling their ventures.
The Baltimore Together initiative is committed to fostering an inclusive, innovation-driven economy where diverse founders in industries such as the Life Sciences, MedTech, and Light Manufacturing can thrive. These innovators are not only advancing patient care but also driving economic growth and reinforcing Baltimore’s status as a national leader in healthcare innovation. Recently, WBAL 11 News highlighted two such founders, Dr. Samantha Scott of JuneBrain and Chibueze Ihenacho of ARMR Systems, showcasing their contributions to Baltimore’s growing innovation ecosystem.
After being diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, Dr. Samantha Scott recognized a critical gap in healthcare—specialists often lack the time and tools to effectively monitor patients between visits. This realization led her to establish JuneBrain, a company revolutionizing real-time disease monitoring through AI-powered wearable technology.
JuneBrain’s groundbreaking wearable eye-scanning device and SaaS platform provide early detection of new disease activity, allowing clinicians to track progression and treatment response between clinical visits. With an estimated 1.3 billion people worldwide affected by conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), JuneBrain’s technology has the potential to transform neurology and eye care. Under Dr. Scott’s leadership, the company has secured investment from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and TEDCO, driving its growth and impact.
As the Founder and CEO of ARMR Systems, Chibueze Ihenacho is pioneering next-generation hemorrhage control solutions for traumatic injuries. A graduate of Georgia Tech with a background in biomedical engineering, Ihenacho has spent the past seven years building entrepreneurial ventures focused on expanding access to quality healthcare. His leadership has been recognized by Magic Johnson’s 32 Under 32, Entrepreneur magazine, and,and the Georgia Tech Alvin M. Ferst Leadership & Entrepreneur Award.
ARMR Systems is addressing a critical challenge in emergency care: hemorrhage control. Hemorrhage accounts for 90% of preventable military deaths and 35% of pre-hospital deaths in the U.S. ARMR’s innovative wearable system is designed to stop severe arterial bleeds quickly and efficiently, bridging gaps in trauma care and increasing survival rates worldwide. Through his company’s life-saving work, Ihenacho is shaping the future of emergency medicine and reinforcing Baltimore’s role as a hub for cutting-edge MedTech innovation.
The work of Dr. Scott and Mr. Ihenacho highlights the immense potential of Baltimore’s founders in life sciences and MedTech. However, their journeys also emphasize the need for greater access to capital, resources, and mentorship to level the playing field for under represented entrepreneurs.
The Baltimore Together initiative is committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring that diverse founders have the tools they need to succeed. By investing in these innovators, we’re not only strengthening Baltimore’s economy but also driving advancements that improve healthcare outcomes worldwide.
Join us in celebrating these remarkable leaders and supporting a more inclusive future for Baltimore’s innovation economy.
